I love to see children who are so delicate and gentle with animals.  It warms my heart amidst a sea of brats pulling cats’ tails and getting whacked.

Also JESUS THAT’S A SNUGGLY CHICKEN.

I love how she reaches up on her tippy toes to snuggle into his shoulder.

To be more exact, that’s a hen. Which is the female. This is likely not his first encounter with her. My grandpa had chickens and hens, and if you visit them frequently like this they develop affection to you. I would know, because I sat in the chicken coop alot. The hens get a small maternal kick, and come to cuddle you because she wants to keep you warm, like she would do with her chicks. This means the boy has spent alot of time with her, and that just makes it more heart warming.

One of the few likeable things about Florida is how you see all these weird storks and ibis things and jungle birds in the garbage everywhere. We see all these exotic dinosaurs eating out of dumpsters behind fast food places and first we were like “who’s throwing out all these damn birds” but then like “oh they throw themselves out” and now we always make reference to how they belong in the garbage to the point that we see birds anywhere else and are like “look at those birds who forgot to throw themselves away”

These things, in particular. White Ibis. These are easier to find than pigeons. I could drive to a Wal-Mart right now and see 20 of them bobbing around.

And throwing themselves out

Frogmouths are indeed very handsome devils…

Until they open their mouth…

and you realize they are basically bird muppets.

The Long-tailed Widowbird:

The Long-tailed Widowbird is found in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia.

The first time I saw this bird was in book when I was a little girl.  We had to create a project and I instantly fell in love with this beauty.  I first witnessed it with my own eyes a little later riding in a packed minicab with my mother traveling from South Africa to Lesotho to attend a funeral in our village. One flew alongside us as though chaperoning us to the pain and heavy freedom of a family burial.  Squashed in between tired mine-workers, city dwellers going home, I fell in love. It’s my favourite bird.

I admit I forgot it was Earth Day today until I came across Dynamic Africa's posts on my Dashboard.  Everyday is Earth Day for us Africans I believe.  Nonetheless, seeing all that natural beauty reminded me of my favourite animals, birds, insects from home.
